How do I reset a gateway profile 1.5 bios version 14.00 password?
I have a gateway profile 1.5 that someone gave me, but he can't remember the bios password, is there anyway that I can reset the password?
If gateway motherboards are like most others, you can locate a jumper which shorts the motherboard. Usually, this is a three prong jumper, A,B,C...jumper when motherboard is not shorted is A,B. To short the board, move jumper to position B,C. Wait about 10 seconds for the board to discharge. Then reset the jumper back to A,B. This will reset the BIOS to default settings and wipe out the BIOS password.
Another way to do this, is to pull the flat battery temporarily from the motherboard. This will cause the BIOS to drain electrical current. Be careful when pulling the battery, and make sure you wipe fingerprints (hands have acid in sweat), the battery with a clean cloth, then wait about 30 seconds, reinsert the battery with the correct side UP. The BIOS should be reset to default.
Just realize, that when you reset the BIOS, any specific settings that Gateway made to the computer will be eliminated. You may have to go into the BIOS and reset certain features in order for the computer to work correctly.
It's too bad the BIOS was password protected to begin with because you cannot now go into the BIOS to write the settings down.
If I were you, I would go onto the Gateway site and see if you can pull down an old errata sheet that lists your BIOS settings before shorting the board and loosing its original settings.
