Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant?
i am pretty much up in the air here. I know that NPs and PAs have very similar jobs and that they are based on different educational models. i also know that they make about the same. so what do you guys think the main thing im thinking about a NP is if i want to change later down the road i could become a CRNA or always have nursing to fall back on
There are huge advantages and disadvantages to both professions. NPs have a huge advantage over PAs in terms of what they can do. Not one state in the nation allows PAs to practice without a physician. By contrast some states do allow NPs to open up an office. NPs have an advantage in Gynecology and Anesthesiology because nurses delivered babies and put patients asleep before PAs even existed.
On the other hand, I found PAs to be much friendlier and more professional. I even found a research paper showing patients feel more comfortable talking with a PA than a NP.
Unless you plan to deliver babies or open up your own office you would probably be happier as a PA. On the other hand you could get a DO or MD for the amount of time it takes to do either one of them.
In the old days it took less time to become a PA. Today the vast majority of PA programs are at the Master's degree level. For one or two years more schooling you could be a physician and have more options than PAs or NPs.
