My HP desktop is blue screening and i was told to reformat the disk but i dont know how.?
My desktop is blue screening like mad and my moms freind who is an it person told her to reformat the disk...except i dont know how to do that. my friend is willing to let me borrow his vista dvd. i have a microsoft serial sticker on my tower...would it be possible to use that to reinstal vista or do i need to buy a new copy?
You don't need to reformat your disk - that's the standard response of someone who has no clue how to troubleshoot a system problem. Tell your Mom to get another friend. When she asks why, tell her I said he's an idiot - you may quote me. If she asks why you should believe me over him, tell her I used to manage an HP OEM Repair Depot in the days before they had idiots for techs. I guarantee if you wipe your drive you'll be beating your head against a wall trying to get it to work again unless you have a set of original recovery disks.
Since you don't have enough info here I can't troubleshoot it very much, but note that you should have at least updated your Vista edition to the latest Service Pack. If you haven't, do that first.
First, get the Product # from your system - it'll be on the back or side of your tower. Product #, NOT MODEL. Product #'s usually end in ABA or something similar. Go to this link at HP:

Enter your Product # into the "Enter your product number field", then click on Next. The PN takes you to your system configuration Model #, not the one on your label, which is normally the Series Model #.
Click through until you get to the main support page for your system, then click on "Solve a Problem". Next Window, click on Operating System/Software. Go through the list until you find a BSOD problem and click on it.
If you can't resolve it there, go to the Support Forums and do a search there on your system and OS edition.
Generally, BSOD's on Vista are due to either a lack of resources (RAM), Service Pack and other updates not being installed, or a combination. Vista, when properly updated is a very stable platform.
Give this a try before you shoot yourself in the foot (or you Mom's friend).
